When You Need Forgiveness or Struggle to Forgive, You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone

The need for forgiveness, or the difficulty of forgiving someone else, can weigh heavily on the heart. Whether you are carrying guilt, regret, resentment, or the pain of being wronged, it can feel isolating and exhausting. You are not the only one who has struggled with this.

You Are Not Alone

Questions about forgiveness often raise deeper issues of justice, healing, shame, and whether real change is possible. Many people in the Bible wrestled with both receiving and extending forgiveness. God does not turn away from those who need mercy or who find it hard to give.

What the Bible Says

1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
God offers complete forgiveness to those who come to Him honestly. His forgiveness is not based on our ability to earn it.

Ephesians 4:32
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
We are called to forgive others because of the forgiveness we have first received from God through Jesus.

Colossians 3:13
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Forgiveness is both a decision and a process. God invites us to release the debt in the same way He has released ours.

Practical Steps You Can Take Today

  • Honestly name what needs to be forgiven, either in yourself or toward someone else.
  • Talk to God about the guilt, anger, or hurt you are carrying.
  • Consider whether there is a next step of apology, release, or boundary that is needed.
  • Write down what you are ready to release.
  • Reach out to a Christian volunteer who can listen and pray with you.

Sometimes What We’re Facing Leads to Deeper Questions

Can God really forgive me?
Is it possible to forgive someone who has deeply hurt me?
What does true freedom from guilt or resentment look like?

These are important questions, and you don’t have to explore them alone.
